New Cummins Light-Duty Diesel Coming Soon.
Many Dodge Ram Turbo Diesel owners have wished that they could have the same type of performance, durability and fuel efficiency in their other vehicles. Work is underway at Cummins to make that wish a reality.

The new Cummins light-duty diesel engine will be the first of an all-new class of automotive engines for Cummins. It is designed to be high-speed, lightweight and well below the size range of traditional Cummins engines. DaimlerChrysler will be the major customer for the engine, using it to power vehicles below 8,500 pounds for a number of automotive applications. Currently, most vehicles in this weight class are powered by gasoline engines.

The new Cummins light-duty diesel engine will feature a number of new technologies to reduce the exhaust emissions. This new engine will also provide a number of performance benefits compared to gasoline engines, including greater torque and improved durability. Plus, the new engine will provide significantly better fuel efficiency. Preliminary estimates are that the engine could deliver up to 30 percent greater fuel efficiency than comparable gasoline engines.

The Cummins Columbus, Indiana, engine plant will be the production facility for this new family of light-duty clean-diesel engines, which Cummins plans to begin manufacturing by 2010.

The light-duty diesel is the result of a nine-year partnership between Cummins and the U.S. Department of Energy, with the goal of bringing clean diesel technology to a wider market in the United States.
